Did you know that a recent University of Alaska Southeast graduate in elementary education is using place-based training to bring nature into her classroom?
Amanda Friendshuh completed her Bachelor of Arts in elementary education at UAS in May 2020 and immediately was hired to teach third grade at Chapman Elementary and Middle School in Anchor Point, Alaska while also participating in UAS’ reading specialist master’s program.
Amanda came from a small community in Interior Alaska and said UAS provided the perfect transition to college life and a larger community, providing exemplary training in education while still maintaining a close connection to the outdoors.
She says her academic career at UAS has directly contributed to how she approaches education in her own classroom and her ability to serve a diverse population of students.
Amanda’s advice for young women entering higher education is to seize every opportunity to learn and discover.
